I'm trying to finish stocking my 30 gal, and I was looking for a little advice.

I'm planning on a final outcome of something like this...

1 German Blue Ram (or Bolivian)
8 Cardinal Tetras
6 Platy's (7 if you include the lone fry who managed to survive)
1 BN

I thought about getting a pair of Rams, but I have seen in a number of places where they can get rather aggressive should they decide to mate. Not exactly what I am looking for.

Would the single be ok by herself (i'd likely be going for a female, as i've heard males are far more territorial)?

Should I maybe look at something else instead of the Ram?

An alternative I was thinking of would be a school of 8 Cardinal Tetras, and a school of 8 Golden Tetras, instead of the Ram.

Comments/Suggestions?

One ram will be fine by himself. The do however display their colors and behavior better in pairs. IMO you have plenty of room for 2. The chances of getting a pair out of just 2 is slim to none.

So what you're saying is that if I am hoping to pick up a pair, I should probably pick up a couple of lottery tickets too?

Dually noted.

Actually, the chances of getting a pair with two fish is 50/50; if the lottery was that good, I'd play it every day! Rams are usually not toooo aggressive when breeding, but some have reported a few problems, so why not start with one, and after the tank is up and running for a while, you can think about getting a second?

Should it be 2 males, 2 females, or M&F?
