| Stocking for a Column Tank | |
larry c![]() Hobbyist Posts: 95 Votes: 0 Registered: 16-Mar-2004 ![]() | I have the opportunity to purchase a column tank about 1ft in diameter and 5ft high. Any stocking suggestions for a tank of this type? |

There won't be as much surface area as in a regular rectangular tank, so you won't be able to put much in there. Also, how are you going to gravel vac the gravel in this tank? You'll either need a 5 foot arm (lol) or a 5 foot gravel vac! (not the tubing part, but the larger part that you sift through the gravel) What about filteration? I don't think the current would circulate througout the whole tank. Maybe if you had plenty of air stones on the bottom? I don't know. As for fish, I would say any livebearer would do fine. |

MegTheFish![]() Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 ![]() | But wouldn't the fish waste and extra food rot at the bottom of the tank if you didn't gravel vac? |

That is why you get a snail and a filter. Also, that is why fishtanks cycle, to decompose it, and turn them into nitrates. |
MegTheFish![]() Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 ![]() | There would still be stuff sitting on the bottom though. A snail would help, yes, but I don't think it would get every little "crumb". And I don't think the intake tube on a filter would have enough sucking power to get something off the bottom of a 5 foot tank IF the filter is at the top, but maybe there could be a filter on the bottom. |

But that's because it's a heavily planted tank, and all the fish poo and extra food is really good for the plants. I still do regular water changes, but I don't disturb the gravel. The water parameters are perfect too - 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and nitrates are always under 10. I have a nice la ![]() I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Put a 4-5 inch gravel bed in there, with a biowheel filter to take out the junk immediatly, and it just collects junk for a few years. You need to buy fish that live 2-3 years, and clean or get new gravel after they all live out their life. |
