I have a 90 gallon cycled tank that will soon be the home of 3 small angels and 1 pleco. I am looking for ideas on compatible tank mates for them. Maybe a school (9-10) of brightly coloured smallish (1-2) fish would work? Or more angels? Or some kind of centrepiece fish? Also this move leaves my 15 tall empty. For it, I like the idea of tiger barbs and cories but with the tigers being fin nippers Im not sure if it would fly. What about an algae eater for the 15?

1)For the 90 I'd recommend two blood-red parrotfish. Natural coloring of BRIGHT orange will make a killer centerpiece fish. I'd also throw a school of 8 Blackskirt Tetras in there, they'll be big enough to not get eaten most likely...

2)For the 15 I wouldn't go with tigers since they need to school and a school of 6 at a max size of 4" each would be overstocked alone. Ottos'll be a nice algae-eater once you get some algae established in there, other than that, I'd probly just go with a tetra school. I personally like a school of rummynose tetras, but there's lots of choices...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

And some small loaches or cories for the bottom then a dwarf gourami or two.

How about some Rams in the 15?

The substrate in the 90 is coarse and sharp so I'm not sure cories would enjoy it.
I love the look of red parrotfish but am have trouble finding info on them. I thought they were aggressive.
Some rams get pretty big. Do you know of a small species that would work in a 15?
Are otto's very delicate fish?

Ottos can be delicate, if you don't know how to take care of them. Bolivian rams are pretty hardy, and stay nice and small. Also, you don't consider angels as centerpiece fish? Maybe just get a couple more.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Bolivian Rams get to be 3-4". Do you think a pair of them and a bristlenose catfish would be a high bio-load for a 15 gallon? I would like to keep the bio-load and maintenance down on all my tanks. What would be a good algae eater for a 5.5 gallon with a male betta in it?

A pair of rams and a BN would be a lil much for a 15, but should be alright as long as you keep up on your water changes. The only other thing I would think about with this choice is, you will have 2 fish that never really leave the bottom of the tank, and another that hides all day. So it would be a very "non" active thing to look at.

No Blood Parrots are not aggressive, as a mater of fact they are know for being on they shy side. I f you go with them make sure you have some flower pots or other caves readily available. Can you have a mean one? Yup. But even in that case they really can't inflict damage outside of stress. Their mouths don't shut there for they can not bite/fin nip.

A good algae eater for a 5 gal with a Betta in it would be an apple snail. They do not reproduce without a mate and are quit neat to look at. The only problem with one is they do get big (the size of an apple) so you will need to return him for a new smaller one at some point. Most of your LFS would gladly trade you a huge apple snail for a smaller one.

Pristella tetras would be very nice, as would some silvertip tetras or bloodfins.
I think you could even go for a school of some type of small rainbowfish if that tickled your fancy.
Another option is hatchetfish, and rummynose tetras if you can find them are just gorgeous!

Good luck choosing!
