Hey all,

After a lil break from the aquarium, i've decided to get back into it, and decided, to get some oddball's for my tank.

Now i want the majority of fish to be odd or not as common as most fish, i don't want overly expensive rare fish. Just the not so common but odd one's.

I would like a couple of floor fish, a school of fish, and maybe a centre piece fishy, and just some other oddballs

Just send me what YOU would put in there.

Thanks

Dragon Eel is where I would start.

In captivity rarely more than 15 inches. It is a pretty cool eel (have one at home). It works in a 55 gallon tank because it rarely swims around. Just kinda picks its hiding holes and spots and comes out for feeding time. It is a very peaceful eel, especially in comparison to all other eels I have ever owned.

Looked around online and found these:
an excellent site:

Thinking about what's available in Australia - glass catfish come to mind.

Or maybe African Butterfly fish:

i might be wrong about this, but isn't it possible to have a school of RTBS? i wouldn't mind a school of them and a few other fishies, because im guessing a school of RTBS would take up most of the room.

Cheers

I think RTBS need to be kept singularly, especially if not in a huge tank.

I'm not sure on the cost of the african butterfly fish - they're not too cheap, but not outrageously expensive. I think I saw some for about $15, but could be wrong.

If you could get a few Amazon Leaf Fish (Monocirrhis polyacanthus), that would be cool. When they extend their mouths it nearly doubles their entire length.

Once you tame them, and that's pretty easy with this species, they will come up to the front of the tank with their hunting colors and big puppydog eyes when they see you. They are amazing fish.

However, be advised that Monocirrhus polyacanthus, the South American Leaf fish, needs live foods. Weaning it onto non-living foods is a challenge for the experienced.

If you can keep it supplied with live foods, however, it makes a pretty interesting oddball. And one that will spawn in the aquarium. Spawning behaviour is similar to Cichlids, but fry care is not as advanced. The venerable Innes book has a lot to say about this fish: I gather Innes was rather fond of it!

What about a BGK? Or are they to big for a 55 gallon. Or you could try some glass fish!

If you can get some non-painted ones in your area, I'd agree that Glass Fish would be a nice addition. Humphead Glassfish would be even better.
