Has been running for a little over a year. All is well Just lost a few fish along the way and want to restock a little. I have a male blue ram, and 5 tetra. O and an oto. Any Ideas? I'm into just a bout any fish. Also I do weekly water changes of about 20% |

I've seen plenty of trains that have people packed in like sardines, but that's not the way I want them to be when I ride. If your hex is anything like my hex was then it's taller than it is wide, and that is the problem. The one inch per gallon "rule" is rubbish really. It only 'works' if you've got a standard longer than tall tank, and are stocking it with small, slim bodied fish such as tetras. The reason for hexes being hard to stock is that the taller than wide shape mean there's very very limited surface area, and surface area is where the gas exchange happens, gas exchange combined with gallonage is what should determine stocking. Since ottos are schooling fish you might consider upping those. However they are often delicate when brought home from the store and may be trouble. Corys would go nicely, but you'd want to stick with the smaller sized ones (adult size 2" or less) and those can tend to be a tad delicate as well. Which fish did you lose? That may give us an idea on what goes well in your tank or what you should be doing better to prevent more losses. Many fish last more than a year. ^_^ ![]() |
