I've never kept swordtails in anything but straight freshwater without the addition of salt, so as far as I know, they should be perfectly happy in such conditions...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

Yeah paradise fish are a good choice. But make sure you don't get any thing that looks like it ie. gouramis, bettas and especially other paradisefish.

iltat- Would a swordtail do well in my tank? I can't put any salt in because of my cories, so would that pose a health problem for a swordtail if I get one?

As for the stocking, others have already mentioned it, and it's always a matter of opinion, so here's my recommendations for fish:

1 Dwarf Gourami...I'd only go with one as it'll show him off as a centerpiece fish too...

OR

1 Male Sowrdtail...The pairing ratio for these is 1 male/3 females, which you DEFINITELY don't have room for, and two males may fight, so I wouldn't do that either...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

It is true that it's my tank and only I sit in front of it for hours and watch my fish's behaviour. I know there's room in the upper regions that a few small top dwellers could easily inhabit and thrive in while making a beautiful showing in my tank. Of course I want healthy, happy fish- they're more beautiful when they're healthy, well fed, and have pleanty of room to swim around in and show off.

Celtgirl, just so you know, I agree with you. Asking an opinion on what fish to get often results in people suggesting a tank is overstocked, often less so than their own though....its best to just agree to disagree and remember its your tank, only you know if your fish are happy and have enough space. Just take everything people say with a grain of salt, the best advice will come through loud and clear and the rest will fall at the way side.
On the subject of your choices, I say Good Choice! Dwarf Gouramis are wonderful fish, and guppies are always active, friendly, and colorful!

A betta wouldn't do too well in the current from my filter and powerhead. I went by my LFS and I think I'll get a dwarf Gourami and a pair of guppies. That'll add some activity a color to the top of my tank. And to reiterate, I'm NOT worried about overstocking. My tank was WAY overstocked for a month and none of my fish were stressed or sick and my WQ was very good. If I add 3 small fish to my tank now, everyone will still have plenty of room and my filter can handle keeping the WQ excellent.

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some suggestions. I'm wanting to add a couple of fish to my cycled 20 gallon hex that would get along with the current residents.

I have:

7 cories
4 otos
3 yoyo loaches.

I'm wanting to get a small number (2-3) of middle or top dwelling fish that have bright colors. I was thinking maybe a dwarf gourami or a pair of Blue Rams. I would ideally like to find a fish that is naturally purple if possible. I saw some beautiful purple fish (some sort of tetra and blood parrot cichlids) at my LFS the other day, but they were dyed (which I promptly complained about, but the guy couldn't do anything as the owner only cares about $$) so I won't buy them. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

A couple of male guppies might also be a good idea. They come in just about any color...

The tank needs some fish taking out before you can add more unfortunately. If you remove some, I'd agree with a male fighter or dwarf gouramis.

I'll consider platies. I'm heading up the my LFS today, so I'll take a look at their platies and gouramis. I've decided against rams- they're mainly bottom fish.

I don't really want a school of fish though- just a couple of more colorful fish.

And my tank is capable of holding many more fish without affecting water quality too badly because until recently it was WAY overstocked (my nitrates were about 50 at their highest) because my other tank broke (glass was cracked after an idiot friend of my sister's ran into it or something- they never would tell me just what happened) and I had to put the fish from there into the 20 hex until she could replace it. I ended up adding 6 zebra danios, and 6 tetras (blind and buenos aires) for about a month and they caused no trouble. At the tme the accident happened, I was just getting ready to add a couple of more fish to the tank because all my bottom feeders were settled in and happy (my cories even laid eggs, though they got eaten I assume.)

With that stocking, you can't really add any more fish. Hex tanks dont have that much surface area, plus, all those fish max out that 20 already. If you were to return some existing fish, I would recommend a couple of platies.

Well, if you want fish for the middle to top of your tank, Blue Rams wont be the fish. They are a lower level living fish, and wont very often venture near the top.
Dwarf Gouramis are a good choice for a mid to top fish. They will sometimes go in the lower level, but mostly stay mid to top.
As for purple fish, when it comes to freshwater, I cant think of any purple fish aside from Bettas.
You could have a male betta in that tank, it would be just fine with the corys loaches and ottos.
Another good option is a smaller schooling fish, say like glowlight tetras, or neons, cardinals, or white cloud mountain minnows. They would give a nice top school to your tank. Add a few of them and you would have some action at the top. Danios are also good schoolers, but mine dont even go to the top at all, they stay in the plants near the bottom.

I don't think so. The only fish I have that leave the bottom third of the tank are the Otos. I would just like to add a couple of fish to live in the upper areas of my tank.

Isn't that an already stocked 20 gallon hex?
