Gotta tell ya this story. My daughter brings home a plastic soda contain that was made into a biological aquarium in her class back in April. It included a small plant, some gravel and water that was black from algae. It sat in the kitchen a few days before my wife noticed the smell and told me to pitch it. When I emptied the black water into the sink, slowly to avoid spillin the gravel, I noticed movement in the remaining gravel. To my surprise, there was one guppy still living in the mess. I quickly moved her to my 30G that houses a few goldfish. Anywhere else she would have been eaten. I can tell you she is still going stong today, living in the plant life at the water's edge. I have yet to see her venture down with the big boys.

Have to 'put my teachers head on here' and say I'd report the teacher to the head/principle. It may be seen as a 'trivial matter' to the people concerned, but the implications could reach far further than that one guppy. A class of ? 25? pupils, all being 'educated' that a) tropical fish can withstand cold temperatures b) they can re-create an aquarium in such a small container, without filtration c) the cost of life is so cheap.

I'm a teacher and have set up three 500-litre aquariums in my school. So many pupils bring their unwanted fish into me because they can't look after them. If their teacher is saying this is OK???? What are the implications?
