Well, I was going to be putting the Jack Dempsey in the 40g I have setting up shortly, but hes no long with us. So I'm trying to come up with ideas now.

Its a 40g long, lightly planted, swords and java moss, 100 pounds of river rock, glass tops and Magnum HOT filter.

I'm thinking about something fresh water that is exotic. Thought about newts for a while, but I'm not sure.

Any body? Any ideas? Agressive and only one is fine. I'm just looking for any ideas

With all that rock it sounds like it'd make a nice rift lake cichlid tank. I can't really add too much about that, but there are many small species, including shell dweller cichlids.

If you don't mind hanging on the brackish side, you could go mudskipper. If the rocks are smooth enough for newts, then I'd assume they'd be smooth enough for mudskippers to chill out on as well. On the other hand, mudskippers do tend to be very hardy, and as far as I've seen full freshwater has no negative effect on them. Also, mudskippers are plain awesome. If you can get one in your area they're quite an interesting animal.

thought about the cichlids, but i'm more into something different.

the newts is certainly a possiblity now. I had even thought about a fresh water eel, but more research is needed.

even open to the idea of dwarf puffers. as with the tank that size, and just them, i could have a nice stock
