I found a vase at home that is shaped like a long cylinder except it is fatter in the center and thinner at the ends.
It can hold about 5.3 litres or 1.4g of water. What, if anything, could i put in there?
Would a single betta work?
Or maybe just some ghost shrimp?

A single betta could probably work, it's a bit bigger than a betta bowl. You could probably fit in ghost shrimp with the betta too if you wanted. But that would probably be about it then.

Would the lack of surface area be a problem for a betta???
I guess i could use an airstone if it was....

Is there anything else i could put in this tank

You can do a fair bit with it, you could even build yourself a SW reef!

I'd probably plant it and do snails or bugs or something. I have a little mudeye in a bowl at the moment, and a caddisfly larva, both of which are pretty interesting.

If you are wanting a betta, I'd consider asking local breeders if they have any runts or bonsais. Less skilled breeders (myself included) will sometimes produce these accidentally and they are generally not all that suited to larger tanks. That'd be more suitable for a vase setup than a full grown VT.

I would be wary of that lack of surface area though, and would probably suggest that you re-measure the volume if you were to only fill it to the point at which it started to narrow again, and see if that is still anywhere near viable.

If not, what about a peace lily or some other plant that will grow with it's feet in water? Maybe lucky bamboo? you could try your hand at a planted nanotank (picotank at that size maybe?)
