G'day to all
I am lucky enough to be collecting a brand new, custom tank on Saturday (birthday present) - it is 50x50x75 - square base (50 gallons US). I will definitely go for tropical environment and I was wondering if any of you could give me some tips as to a kick- set up - my partner does not do things by half so expect the best filters etc.

So, if you have the time, please advise of your "dream" set-up given such a blank canvass including substrate, plants and of course stock.

Thanks in advance.

Clinton

I'd have to say that, no matter what everyone else's "dream" setup is, there is bound to be one that you'll like even more. It's just personal opinion, just go with the fish, substrate, plants, and decor you think you'll really like. Just throw all that together, and you will most likely end up with something you think is awesome!

agreed, go for what YOU want, we can all tell you what we would like in that tank, but it is not us who will be enjoying it. I always tell my customers that ask me the same question to do research, look at all your options and go for what you absolutely LOVE! Don't settle for what your LFS has in currently as well, this hobby is all about patience anyway. If there is something you really want to get ask a manager, as long as they are availible they will normally be brought in, be polite though! Wait for the fish you really want, it will REALLY be worth it.

A good idea, before planning your setup, would be to look at several pictures of tanks already set up.. This may give you some ideas or inspiration..

Here's a link to Fp's photo booth..

Also do a google search for 'images' use search words such as 'aquarium'.

OK, I've taken some time out from work and popped down to the LFS. I'm thinking of some planted driftwood, a pretty lump of lava rock and a coarse sand substrate. Stock wise I'm thinking:

10 Glowlight Tetra
10 Neon Tetra
2 Bristlenose Catfish
2 Pearl Gourami

I think I will need another school or a small group of "focus" fish - firstly do you think this will be overstocked and if not, do you have any suggestions as to what might "mix" well with the above selection?

Your planned tank won't be overstocked with just the fish you have above. If you want a nice, attractive school of fish, why not get a school of gold barbs? They're great community fish, they stay pretty small, and are eye-catching.

I would stick with that list. Start out small and then once you get used to your tank and the fish in it i would add more. Keep as simple as possible in the biggining makes things easier.
