my soninlaw is setting up a new large tank for one oscar so he is asking can he also keep a soft shell turtle and or a teacup stingray as well?

Can't tell you until you actually tell us how big the tank is. If it's 75 gallons, then no, the Oscar should be by itself. If it's less, you can't really keep any of them to adulthood.

I'm not sure about that turtle, but I'm not really going to comment since I don't know much about them. A cursory glance around the internet seems to signify that they are aggressive, may be fish eaters, and need very clean water.

Oscar and stingray seems to be a dangerous combination. People that shell out their cash for stingrays almost never put them with anything remotely aggressive. Stingrays aren't very aggressive and if the Oscar starts pushing it around then it actually won't really going to be able to defend itself too much. On the other hand, it isn't unheard of for a stingray to use it's venom.

Remember, with these predatory fish, to maintain the water quality as high as necessary for a stingray (think wild-caught discus), then you'll need to do lots of water changes and over the top filtration (can't stress this enough!). Unlike other freshwater fish, stingrays are sensitive to nitrates, I'm talking large water changes at least weekly.

thanks for advice S i think there will also be an issue of the amount of waste produced so i will tell him to give that idea a miss and stick with his oscar the tank by the way will approx 240/300 litres which is over 100gals
