So I work at *chain* and passing by the pets department I was stopped by a customer wishing to buy some fish. I asked and answered a few questions she had, bagged up a few livebearers, and we went our different ways. Although I should get a raise for being overqualified for the part, I enjoyed the fact of knowing I got to the customer before the actual employee covering pets. Personally I wish the big chains such as where I work would not sell fish, but I doubt the person who makes those decisions would listen.

Nice job. And by the way, why don't you speak with the management and let them know of your knowledge of and interest in seeing that the fish department is run properly. If you express it in a way that convinces them that it would be good for business and possible future sales increases it may be of a benefit to you. That is if you are interested in working or possibly running that department.

I have thought about transfering departments to pets, although it would be alot of work keeping it stocked. (we go through alot of dog food) I doubt I can get out of where I am for a while, seeing how my department is really understaffed. But it is worth a shot, that would make one less complication to the newcomers to the hobby. Besides, worse comes to worse they say no.
