Hello,

I was at the LFS the other day and there was this remarkable fish there. I can't remember what it was called though!!! I will attempt to describe it now:

It was a diamond shape (sort of)
It was brown and black and white
And it was quite big
It had the word Borneo in its name

any ideas on this fish??

thanks

Hillstream Loach, commonly called some other random names that include stuff with Borneo.

Thats what I thought too, except it was "rather large"? I thought hillstreams are on the smaller side.

Was the fish freshwater? Did it look like a plec/sucker/catfish?

The describtion given made Chinese Hi Finned Banded Shark spring immediately to mind. It has all sorts of other names so maybe Borneo is one them.

Have a look at this link and let us know if that's it http://www.csupomona.edu/~jskoga/Aquariums/myxocyprinus/myxocyprinus.html

If it is this fish I would say keep away from it. I've seen these here in Indonesia- they are quite common. In opinion they are an extremely ugly fish, but interesting looking, but as they get older they lose all that color and the shape and just become a huge ugly dull brown catfish ! If they live that long, they rarely do in an aquarium. Leave them in the wild were they belong.

Hmmm...it was neither

Yes, it is a freshwater fish, and no it didn't look like a pleco, or catfish

I have got to go back there and hopefully it should be there

oh BTW...if it helps, it had a huge price tage attached to its name aswel

Could it be a Tiger Datnoid, maybe? That's what sprung to mind when it was described, although I'm not sure where Borneo jumped into the name.

How big..in estimation..was it?

The "shark" mentioned..shouldn't be kept as it's endangered..plus, it's a schooling fish..and needs company of it's own kind..besides the fact that it gets over 3 ft long. It turns from hi finned..and short..to long and flat like a regular catfish.

If it's a "Borneo sucker" of any kind..Hillstream loach..
here's a pic of one of my spotted Hillstreams

I'll have to punish whatever LFS worker labels a Datnoid like that... :%)

Never though of that one. That's another fish that is quite commonly found for sale here in Indonesia. It's native here, found in Sumatra and Borneo. Big buggers. Sometimes call Siamese Tiger Fish so I'm sure somebody could quite easily call it Borneo Tiger Fish or Sumatra Tiger Fish.
