I wanna us peat moss to soften up my water. Can I use any peat moss from a hardware or garden store or should I try something meant for aquariums? I have tried peat granules but they don't seem to soften the water up much.

You can use Peat moss from a hardware or garden store, but you have to make sure that they contain on fertilizers or additives. It has to be 100% peat moss.

How often do you need to change the peat moss and is it harmful to any particular species. I know certain cichlids like it.
