hi guys

I have had my flying fox for some time now and he is doing fine. He eats all types of frozzen food, flakes, algea and cucumber. But are there any other types of vegtables i can feed him as he loves the cucumber? Any ideas would be great thanks

Hi there,
these fish are omnivores, so they eat a little
of everything.
Frozen bloodworms are highly relished.
I have found any type of squash to be highly
desired, the best of which is Zuchinni/Courgette
squash. Try that!
Also, peas, green and yellow beans, pear core,
soft cooked carrots, all are enjoyed as well.

If you're referring to the fish once known as Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus, then you have quite a fish in your collection. It will graze upon algae, and will also eat planarians when hungry. Otherwise, it's a detritivore in the wild that takes in a fair range of foods, both plant and animal in origin, and consequently it's likely to eat most edible things that you offer to it.

Oh, I tried looking it up on Fishbase. Seems the correct name should be spelt Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus with just the one "l". Take a look at this photo and if this is your fish, we're on the right track.

Ive got flying foxes in most of my tanks. Question is , what dont they eat? Any live food, and pellet, any flake, wafers, bits of crustacean, algae, you name it, all goes down the hatch.

Ive never seen one refuse anything, except the king british catfish food, but then I dont blame em.

In all the tanks though, they seem to reliably go for tetra prima as their own choice of main diet. I have flying foxes sourced from different places,of different ages, and they all seem to prefer prima with the odd algae wafer for the main part. They look pretty good on it too. Ive had em for years. Just make sure there is some vegetable fare or algae in the mix of stuff they eat and theyll be fine. Youd have to be trying hard to give a flying fox any kind of nutritional deficiency.

It's definitely a flying fox. I saw a lot of LFS here mis-label SAE as Flying Fox.
