I have read many threads on this site about water changes while cycling a tank. Many people say not to do one, but others say that it is okay to do one. I am a bit confused. Can you do water changes while cycling a tank????

If it a "fishless" cycle, water shouldn't be changed until Nitrate spikes.

I think you definitely want to do one if your ammonia or nitrite levels get to the danger zone. As for routine water changes, I'd like to hear the thoughts of others, too.

If the ammonia or nitrites get too high you have to do a water change or your fish might die.

The reason alot of people don't want to do water changes is they think it'll slow the cycling of their tank however the reason for the elevated levels is that the bacteria colony has not grown large enough to handle the waste.

So it's up to you to remove the excess ammonia and nitrites until they catch up.

It'll cycle just as fast kepping you fish safe as not.

Good luck, Mike
