So I was talking to my best friend's boyfriend's roommate... Well anyway my best friend's boyfriend apparently had the following combo of fish in his 1.6 gallon hex tank

1 pleco
2 cichlids (I do not know what kind)
2 neon tetras

I immediately laughed (in disbelief more than amusement, before I get flamed) at the neons and the cichlids and he said yeah, the neons got eaten pretty fast. One of the cichlid then killed the other, then it died, and then the pleco died.

Then I told him that first off plecos should never ever be in such a small tank. Because they get 2' long and are big waste producers. And then that there aren't really any cichlids for such a small tank either (told him the min for even a small cichlid is 5 gallons). And of course neons being schooling fish they're right out for that type of tank. So yeah basically I told the roommate that the only 'suitable' fish for that size tank would be small livebearers or a betta... then when I next saw the friend's boyfriend I told him his roommate had just been endowed with fish knowledge and he was going to help him out with fish... Actually the roommate had a betta that seemed pretty happy. So yeah hopefully that will work out better now...

Yeah well my friend and her boyfriend know I know a lot about fish. His roommate found out I learned a lot about fish from me talking about them (my friend had told me they had fish in their room so I was certainly interested in hearing about them, then when I talked to his roommate I heard what happened). It's nice to know someone respects fish knowledge. And it's cool to be recognised by someone as an authority on something. (of course, I get to be *the* authority figure on duty at my current job, but that's another story entirely. I'm a night access clerk at my dorm.)

It just sucks though that all those fish died before they listened to you... Since you're the authority figure to your friends ...... Know that plecs get way bigger than 2 inches, some can get to a foot long, and a 1.6 gal hex tank is no place for live-bearers.. A tank that size is only good for bettas.. But if I had a betta it would be in a 5 gal.

Meh, it'd be fine for one or two. It's filtered. I'm pretty sure it could handle a couple guppies because they have a pretty light bioload. And yes, I have heard of plecos getting about TWO FEET long (if they croak at a foot long, they've not reached their full potential size...), and that's what I said! (thanks victimizati0n for pointing out the notation) If they had a normal bioload for their size and only got two inches, then sure they could keep them in that tank!

(and not too be for the fish because they don't seem to mind being on their own)

Whoops, you said two feet, not two inches.
I retract that, my apologies.
Maybe 2 male livebearers if they're small, endlers or guppy males but don't add females because then you have babies and a tank that small would be overcrowded in a blink

as I was telling the roommate... in a tank that small if they had babies there'd be no place to hide and they'd be dinner pretty quick. There aren't any plants, just a little plastic cave at the moment.
