As I've stated in some of my other threads, I currently have a 20 gal tank filled with platy fry.... I thoroughly enjoy watching their growth and development.... I've planned to give the bulk of the fry to my lfs - but I figured I'd keep some of my absolute favorites... Not until today did I wonder --- is this really an option? I got to thinking - REALLY thinking.... The tank in which I would like to transfer the fry - when old enough - is my community tank, and among the inhabitants are the mother and father of the babies.... I would assume that should I add their children - since Mom & Dad won't recognize them as their children - in breeding will occur... Does this weaken the strain? Cause birth defects? ???????? This might be a really stupid concern, but since these things occur in human in breeding, I've been wondering about fish....... and would like to know...

I think it would weaken the strain, I have had baby fish myself, but if I keep them I seperate them to males in one tank and females in the other.

if you keep them all together i think it would weaken the strain, but as long as you don't give them away to anyone else, it;s not going to cause problems with the species as a whole. you might just notice that they breed more, but at the same time there's population control, because some won't survive or will die prematurely, because the recessive traits that can be dangerous become more frequent and soon you might have lots of homozygous recessive fish with bad alleles

In-breeding is more commonly called line-breeding. It is done all of the time in livebearers to promote a desired trait. It does introduce a higher change of genetic abnormalities, but really just out-crossing (adding one or more fish from a completely unrelated source); every other or fourth generation is usally enough to keep the lines widespread/diverse enough to not have any problems genetically.

Thank you koi keeper for the information - truly relieves my mind, because as my babies continue to grow - I'm absolutely certain I won't be able to part with all of them!
One other question, if you don't mind.... After I'd posted this topic, I realized that I'd posted in the wrong forum -- Probably should have been posted in the Breeding forum (?)..... Anyway, I tried to ask to have it moved... but I'm not sure I did it correctly..... Could you give instructions just in case this happens again?

In breeding I find to cause fish to dwarf. They won't grow as large.

Mollies and platies cannot hybrid. The are not closely related enough Very possibly platy/swordtails. The variatus do not always have tails.
