Ive had a male guppy and male platy together in a 5 gal. The colors were good and no fry! Maybe try a male guppy and 2 male platies and an apple snail or 2.

I'll do graffiti,
If you sing to me in French.

I guess he means killies as in "kill"ies. Yeah, many kinds of the smaller fish don't have long life spans.

Zebra danios

or - white cloud minnows

or - about 3 khuli loaches (but don't count on seeing them much)

or - a pair or trio of small cories (only if the cycle is complete) such as pandas

or - guppies (trio - two females and a male or three males)

or - platies (trio - same as above)

or - go brackish with bumblebee gobies...

i managed to keep in a 25L tank:
zebra danillos
serphae tetra
ottos (2, have to provide with alot of food, because you can't produce enough algea)
dwarf gouramis or honey gouramis

they're all nice for such a small tank, and with proper filtration and water treatment they can live more than a year easily.

I have otos and would never keep them in anything smaller than a 10 gallon. Ever.

They need impeccable water quality, even with a good filter it's WAY to hard to keep a 5 gallon that stable. . . even a 10 gallon tank is pushing it.

I would echo the recommendations for killies. A pair of Gardneris would be great in a 5g.

You could go with red zebra danios they can tolerate some crumy water quality. but i think they need florestant light.

Could I put some Guppys in the 5 gallon with anything else, maybe some pygmy corys ? Or maybe some platies.

Any replies would be great.

If I could get some Pygmy Corys, how many could I get, with a trio of Guppies ?

Thanks

not cories i dont think they need a school of 6 which is to much for a 5 gallon. You could put the african dwarf frogs but there not much to look at.

That's just annuals .. although most killies are relatively short lived (a few years, say), so are many of the other fish we keep. The smaller tetras, for example, tend to live about the same, and Bettas as well.
"hence the name"?

But pygmy Cories only get to about 3cm, I would have thought that they would have been great for a 5 gallon.

Could I still get them, even if thats all I can get ?

danios need a LOT of swimming room.

If the tank is cycled and you have ace filtration I think you could probably go wih pygmy cories...especially if you set it up all nice for them, with some plants to sit on, and sand substrate.

Yh I think I will. I gonna change from rough gravel to sand. I have a bridge in the middle so I think that they will like that, and I have plants that they could sit on.

The only worry I have is when cleaning out the tank will the sand cloud the water, or will the sand just fall to the bottom of the tank ?

It will eventually clear and all fall to the bottom.

That sorta depends on what type of sand you are using. If you are using heavy grained sand eg pool filter sand, it shouldn't be such a problem. if you are using play sand, it probably will be. the way to clean sand (apparently!) is to wave the gravel vac over the surface, high enough so it doesn't pick up sand, but low enough so it picks up dirt and debris.

Also I have a bio-wheel that creates a current fallling down towards the bottom of the tank. Could this affect the sand, and make it cloud up ?

Also what is the best type of sand for aquarium use, and where could I get it from ?

A lot of people like to use "pool filter sand" though I don't know where this could be found in the UK.

You can get play sand from Argos for 2.50 a bag, although at 15kg it's a little more than you need.

Your best bet would probably be to jsut get it from the pet shop.
