I'de say Myxocyprinus asiaticus is the most bizzare thing i've seen. They remind me more of a tortoise or maybe some bizzare mamal than they do a fish. check it out

We have a two foot long gourami in one of our display tanks. It's pretty ugly looking (it's the pink variety), and it's also suprisingly aggressive.

I would have to agree on the boxfish - we get them in about the size of a small salad crouton - so they are nicknamed crouton (However, I don't think they're strange, just really cool and cute )

But overall strangest fish? The electric eel that is nicknamed SMUD at one of my LFS - it's just scary ... And lungfish too

But most disturbing are the full grown gouramis - IE the ones that are over one foot in length - they're just downright scary ... Top two on the left - very weird and disturbing

Does anyone know, is a pipe fish aka as a rope fish?

Pipefish are from the order Sygnathiformes while Ropefish are from the order Polypteriformes. About as related as a cat is to a mouse.:%)

anf_redrider - no, they are completely different fish. A pipefish is sort of like a seahorse. A ropefish is more eel-like although not related to eels.

Dragon Goby... They look like the luck dragon from the never ending story. Kinda scary looking with sharp teeth but are filter feeders and didn't even touch my day old guppy fry. They grow up to 16 inches though...

I would have to say anableps and mudskippers are both pretty weird. But also, a store near me sells pipefish. They are some weird fish.

Tweaky, I have some Blind Cave Fish and they were something I always wanted, long before getting the aquarium. A fish with no eyes is strange indeed. Mine do not do well with flake food, cannot seem to find it. But love the sinking OSI Shrimp Pellets and also the Tetra Variety Wafers (which are hard to find where I live). They seem to do just fine with my Tiger Barbs, but do irritate the Plecos because the Cave Fish are inadvertantly always pecking at them while trying to find food. Good luck.

What is the strangest fish you've seen available at the LFS? It can be looks or behaviour.

I think that a short nosed batfish is quite weird, boxfish are strange as well.

The sabre-toothed characin. They are one of the scariest fish I've ever seen. We had one a few months ago, but it sold pretty quickly.

There are at least several different species in the genus, and the one that we got in had much bigger teeth than the one in the picture, and also had a more elongated body.

Despite their appearance, they eat only small fish and are very peaceful to anything they don't think of as food.[/font]
