I'm just trying to figure out what fish I should add to my tank when the time comes. I'm a long way away as my tank is still cycling. Right now I have 4 platies in my 10 gallon tank. Some things I am considering are 1 male betta or a m/f pair of honey gouramis or some cory's. Comments/suggestions?

Cory's are pretty much schooling/social fish and do best when kept in groups of 6 or more, so a 10 gallon tank is really too small to handle a school of most of them. There are some "dwarf" cory's that may work out.

Your platies are going to quickly overpopulate your tank once they start having little ones, unless you only have either males or females. You need to take that into consideration for future stocking.

If adding a honey gourami, I would limit it to just one and not go for a pair.

I already planned for the fry problem. I got all females and if they do happen to have little kiddies I know a store that will take them. For the corys I was thinking pandas...I had heard that they'd be ok in a small tank if I got around 3 of them.

Panda's are a great Cory, but they are a really social fish and need to be in a group of at least 6. Any less and you are doing an injustice to them as many others on this site will attest to.

I hadn't really thought of any cichlids because I had thought that they were all aggressive but after some research this is apparently not the case. Are there any other small cichlids that might work for me?

Some Cichlids are pefectly peaceful - as long as they have enough room to claim proper territories. A 10 gallon tank will be a bit cramped for a pair of Rams. I would go with just one, and even then there might be some territoriality issues when you try to add more fish.

If you want cichlids, I personally would go with Checkerboard Cichlids. They tend to be smaller and less aggressive than Rams, and you could probably keep a pair in a 10 gallon tank with no problems.
