My son has a 10g tank with the following stock:

1x male betta
3x glowlight tetras
1x female cherry barb
1x Apistogramma cacatooides

(other than the betta these were all 'left-over' fish from my other tanks)

The tank is well-planted, lots of hiding places. Two days ago the betta was hiding more often than usual, and after seeing him yesterday it's obvious someone has been nipping his fins. One of the tetras also has a bit of tail-fin damage.

Out of this list, who would be the guilty fish?

I think it's got to be the Apisto. Glowlights and cherries are just too damn shy to do anything like that, and even if they tried, the betta would literally wipe the tank with them.

My guess is either the cherry barb or the apisto.
I kept cherry barbs for awhile and they were only really timid of their own kind. I found them to be always nipping at the guppies tails.

I agree with SVS. The cherry barb, especially with no others of its own kind in the tank would be my first suspect. However, it definitely could be the apisto.

Most likely chery barb, I read that they are a schooling fish and when not in the proper numbers become aggressive.

Cherry barbs can be kept in pairs, actually. Although, personally, I would rather keep them in the same ratio as guppies, that being 1 male to 2 females... my male bothered my female literally to death. He didn't mess with the betta in the same tank, though I imagine that he would have gone after my betta boy soon enough after doing away with his lady friend.

If the apisto is thinking about breeding or has recently sexually matured id say it was him, but youd probably notice him being generally moody. Failing that the vote goes to the barbs. Cherries look kind of innocent, but theyre not. A confirmed fin-nipping species. They can be sneaky about it too, sometimes too shy or preoccupied with the offchance of food while youre there, but when youre gone and they are bored or hungry...it begins....

I agree, probably the cherry or apisto. I've got a 20 with a trio of cherries and a betta among other things, and the cherries and a few of the gold barbs will nip. Barbs in general nip. Keep an eye on that fin, if it starts to look grungy, it might be time for plan B (house it seperately) and proper medication.
