Is windex (or products like it) safe to use on the inside of an empty tank? Also, Im going to get angels, but I'm not sure what color gravel to get. I'd like to get the black sand I saw at Petsmart, but with a 125 gallon tank, it is too expensive. Any ideas?

It's recommended that if you are going to use cleaners on the outside of a tank to spray them on the towel or whatever in another room before wiping the tank. This way, no cleaner gets inside the tank. However, once my dad cleaned the inside of my tank with windex. Nothing happened wrong after filling it up. The residue usually is not enough to harm the fish.

Unless you're doing plants, you only need a light covering of sand. You don't really have to get too much...:%)

I wouldn't use it. I don't take the chance. I use bleach and then a really good rinse. ( actually a couple of really good rinses )

I clean the outside of tanks with tea tree oil mixed with water. .. about 1 oz tea tree oil to 32 oz. water. I clean all glass hoods with it as well - takes water stains and everything else off easily. If it gets inside the tank, not a huge deal ( tea tree oil is the main active ingredient in melafix).

You're better off not using any type of cleanser inside the tank. A nice moist towel works well.

You dont have to go to a LFS for gravel and the like, just go to yhe local stone place and get some. Thats where i got the marble rocks for the bottom and all the slate in my take MUCH MUCH CHEAPER. Although you do have to wash it thoroughly. I'd suggest getting it from a local stone place, placing it in a plastic tub and keep rinsing till it runs clear. Then set it all in the sun to dry making sure all the rocks get baked. I've had NO problems at all with this and i spent a total of 25 dollars for all my gravel and slate compare to probably 3X that at a LFS.
