My dd's betta was in his bowl, (we're in the process of setting a 10 gallon up for him) so I thought, why not give him the thrill of his life and put him in the 30 gallon for now...would he produce enough waste to cycle a tank that big?

I don't think it would be a good idea. For one, the betta probably wouldn't create enough waste to produce much ammonia. Second, bettas are very particular about what they like. Some bettas freak out if they go in a large tank, some love it. You never know, since they all have different personalities. Bettas are also very e to disease. Any chance they get to get sick, they take it and run with it.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

right now I have my betta in my 55 gallon tank just temporarely until I start to fishless cycle it. he LOVES it. He has picked one corner of the tank as his territory and then roams around like hes looking for intruders =)

I agree with janna. A betta really wouldn't give you enough ammonia to throroughly cycle a tank that size. I would suggest a few zebra danios or something similar if you're looking at doing a "stocked" cycle. They're usually hardy enough to handle the ammonia and nitrite and can be kept in groups, unlike the betta. If you're not going to be fishless cycling, I highly reccomend new and improved cycle to jumpstart the tank. It helps the cycle happen more quickly and in doing so, will reduce the stress on your fish.
