I saw an ad in the paper for a 40 gallon tank, c/w stand, light (fluorescent), they didn't know what type of filter, plants, gravel, and approx. 20 fish, for $200.00. It's only about 6 months old. Sounds good to me, but how would I move it? would it un-cycle itself in the process? (It's located about 40 mins. from where I live) Is this a good deal for a tank?

As for moving, you'd have to drain the water and somehow fit the tank in your car. You'd also have to find a way to take the fish for the 40 minute drive without dying.

I guess I would have to catch, and bag them all like you would if you purchased them at the lfs. I've driven 3 hours with fish before to get them home...but would the tank be un-cycled once I got it home and re-set up?

Also, what are the dimensions of a 40 gallon tank?

As long as all the filter media and gravel stayed wet, I think it would be OK for an hour. I mean, I basically had to do the same thing when I change my substrate in my tank....it took me a few hours w/ planting.

Also, there are battery operated air pumps...

If you have other tanks, you could also use filter media from those tanks in the new one.... Or try getting some Cycle or a similar product that helps w/ cycling. I've had great luck w/ it, personally.

A 40 gallon can be a few different sizes.... They should be able to look and see what the filters are....and measure it for you...

i have a dc/ac power inverter. it can be very useful, powering laptop, gps, small tv, even an eheim proII 2028

i've bought fish from a place 40 minutes away, came home with nothing but fish in small bags. this was 2 years ago, they still ticking now.

$200 is a good deal for the whole setup. i spent $1500 when i set up mine.

Well.... I'd say no. If you're looking to buy a used tank, then buy a used tank only and spend no more than $2.00 (US) per gallon. As for the rest of the stuff, price it out and offer 5% of what it would cost new. The electrical equipment will not come with a guarentee, so for all you know it could last no more than a day.
As for the fish, it depends on you. I'd say to offer to take the fish as a service to the seller (free). These may not be the fish you want.
This all of course depends on the equipment and fish. If they're all top-notch really expensive items, then maybe 10%.
