Catch it , bag it and off to the LFS where I just hand them the bag and say donation. Tell the guy why you give it to him though. I've never been turned away by a store owner with a free fish for them that they can resell.

Plecs have a hidden evil in them, and it usually doesn't come out until they are older, but they are known for doing what you have said. Unless you have seen the algae eater doing this, you cannot just blame this on it.
