Hey everyone. I have had a 20 gallon tank up and running for about 3 or 4 months. I cycled the tank with 4 short-finned zebra danios and after it cycled I upped the school to 6. However, I bought 1 long-finned zebra danio by mistake. I have noticed that he is kind of a loner and usually stays by himself while the others hang out together. In the next few weeks I am upgrading to a 55 gallon and wanted to know if I should get more long-finned zebras or if he will do fine with the others. Thanks for reading.

If you want a tank based on danios then do another 5 longfinned but you probably won't be able to fit any other schooling fish in there after that. If you don't want to base the tank on mostly danios I'd just add a couple more short finned danios so their school isn't shorted and leave it that way. The long finned will school with them some and can actually spawn with the shorter finned ones but it may always be a bit seperated from the rest. In a 55 though the siutation may improve some since they can school better. Adding only a couple long fins will only cause there to be several outcast fish scattered through the tank instead of 1.

So you think I should just get more shorter finned danios? They will be going in the 55 once I cycle it.

I have both variety's in my tanks, and they do school together. My school was 5 Short finned then I added in 3 Long finned later on and they started schooling immediately. Add in a few more danios of either variety and you should be good.

Okay, I'll just get some more of either variety. When I got this guy I didn't notice he was a long finned until the next day. It was so hard to see because he was swimming around the bag so fast when I got him. I just love these little guys.
