i was looking in one of my tanks at my lfs and under the gravel i see something pop out and come to the top of air. this tank has only angels and nothing else and then this eel like creature pops out. it was really really long. it sort of looked like a eel or leach. What is this and where did it come from!!!! i am scared to look in that tank now!

Was it a fish or some kind of worm?

Could it have been an insect larva?

Anyhoo, I suspect that it's probably some sort of invert. I don't think a FW moray or spiny couold last so long undetected. Pictures would be of great help.

it was jet black. when i looked at it, it was hard to see the head. but the tip came up to the surface and i think took a breath of air. it looked like it was long but it was like stretching. freaky.

Could it not be a leach? i mean, you said it looked like one, how long can they live underwater?

Believe it or not, I was thinking along those lines as well---maybe an amphiuma or a siren or something. But when you look at it realistically, how would a rare SA amphibian (I'm willing to bet fairly piscivorious as well) enter a home aquarium undected for who knows how long? Could an individual of 2+ feet in length subside on merely fish leftovers?

--- it was at the LFS, not the home aquarium. Maybe that'll help with your IDing
