I was thinking of going to Nanaimo (2 hours away)or even Vancouver(5-6 hours away) to buy fish, how do you get them home in one piece, alive, when it's so hot out? How do you transport them safely?

You can have them bagged up as usual. The fish will survive a trip of a few hours. If you are really paranoid, you could ask the LFS worker to add oxygen (though that isn't really neccessary). To keep the temp constant, put the bagged fish in a cooler.

i live an hour from my closest lfs in tucson, az, the heat sink of the planet. i currently use a dc to ac power inverter (plugs into the cig. lighter and has 2 ac outlets) into which i plug in airpumps hooked up to airstones. using splitters, i can hook up multiple airstones to multiple bagged fish.

i have used battery operated airpumps in the past, but their expense/usefullness ratio is poor. plus i can use the inverter to use a tv/game system combo to entertain the kids on long trips.

I keep a small cooler in my car 'just in case' The long-drive fs I go to always adds oxygen to the fish bags. I don't do anything beyond that.
