I am interested very much in the dwarf puffer species, i have been reasing up on them and would just like some input from someone experienced on whats the best setup for dp. i.e. could they be kept with live plants, best tank size etc. They seem like interesting fish and since there very small finding a place to keep them isnt hard as i already have 2 fishtanks up and running as is.

Well, they do well in many different tank sizes. Smallest I would probably recommend would be a ten. They prefer heavily planted (live or fake) tanks with broken line of sight, this helps keeps squabbles to a minimum.

I would recommend 2-3 gallons per puffer, so you can do the math on how many depending on tank size. Also, if they are old enough to be sexed, 2-3 females per male is also recommended.

Check out Dwarfpuffers.com to find out more about them and how to sex them.

HTH!

Ok now i have my puffer tank set up all i have is 3 puffers and 3 ottos in a 29 gallon right now, i plan on getting more tomorrow as long as these ones do fine then. Also would a raphael catfish be compatible with the puffer tank? seeing how the raphael catfish is armor plated i dont really think puffer could hurt it.

Is it just me or do DPs look a lot like bite sized treats to a raphael?

I have a 7 inch raphael and it has never bothered my dwarf puffer. I have had them together almost a year.

Azrael,
Did you have time to cycle the tank?

Are dwarf puffers actually considered a "hardy" fish?

Depends on what you mean by hardy. They can be in a pretty wide range of water parameters (ph, hardness, temperature to some degree). However, they are very sensitive toward ammonia and nitrIte, either of these, usually from an uncycled tank, will kill them in a hurry.

I have 8 Dwarfpuffers in a 29 gal. I had 10 but 2 died, my nitrite is 0. I was just trying to figure out why i had 2 deaths. I bought them from petsmart, i suppose they were just death ridden when i got them.

They probably had internal parasites. Were their stomachs indented instead of a round belly? Did they eat well?

one lasted like a day and the other one went the day after. One of them seemed to be half dead when i bought it but i decided to take it anyways and see if it lived. The other 8 seem to be doing fine crunching on their little snails
