I've tried to do a lot of things with my 29 gallon starter tank, motivated by many conflicting views as to what exactly I can put in there, but now I'm going for a nearly fresh start. Currently my tank holds the remains of several 'busted' setups; 2 hifin synodontis, 1 pictus cat, 1 pleco, and 1 Blu Acara. I'm selling all of these fish except the hifins to a trusted petstore where I can be sure they'll find a better home, and restocking. My problem is tho, I still haven't gotten any solid feedback as to what exactly can go into a 29 gallon tank comfortably; even the pet store owner simply said 'anything that wont fit into the synos' mouths', so I'm asking for help on this one. If you have a 29 gal or advice on what I could put in one, please post here!

Welcome. It would probably be helpful to everyone to know the dimensions of the tank, water parameters (hardness, ph temp etc), filtration, substrate, live plants or not etc. Also are there any particular fish that you are interested in - i.e., ciclids - gouramis - livebearers - schooling fish etc. I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions!

Thanks, I've been trying to fight a bad habit and not spill it all out at once in a giant illegible paragraph, it scares ppl away. My tank dimensions are approx 30 in. x 12.5 in wide by 15 in. high. I just tested the ph with a pool strip as 6.8-7.0 and the alkalinity very low (40 ppm) The only plants I have growing at the moment are java fern which has taken over two porrus logs. I also have an ample supply of rocks consisting of slate, a chunk of quartz a little bigger than my balled fist, some pumice (real lava rock..like from a volcano) and some crushed coral in a bag that I used for an old african setup

The only thing I know to put in with synodontis would be african cichlids. I've had an african setup before, but this was before I got the synos and the water chemistry was a lot more alkaline. All of my setups have been cichlid based thus far. I've bred african jewels before in a 35 gallon tank ( we had to sell it when we move) and As said above, I have leftover materials from my (non jewel) african setup to raise the ph to about 7.5 and the hardness by quite a bit, but I want to gather up some more ideas before I try and set up an african tank again.

I have a 29G with 1 Angelfish, 1 Pearl Gourami, 1 Flying Fox, 2 Glassfish, and 2 Ottos. Its planted with live plants and fake logs.

Edit- if your tank is only 15" high it is not a 29G. 29G is 30"x18"x12.5"

Yes, your right, I double checked my measuring and ran it thru the volume calculater, it computes as 25 gal. Alas, I got it for Christmas.

With that kind of water (on the soft side with neutral pH), a South American tank would be kind of nice. Even with it being 25 gallons, you could fit a pair of dwarf cichlids and a nice big school of tetras or corydoras catfish.

I'm afraid I've gone a little over 'a pair of dwarf cichlids' my current setup is detailed in my sig. The only fish over 2 inches right now are the synos (4.5 and 5) Fortunately I had my father build me a sturdy double stand out of 2 by 4's, so its feasible for me to buy another used 25 gal breeding/impulsive overflow for the bottom or perhaps a 29 gal to replace the 25 on top. I'll know for sure when my moneys freed up at the end of the month, but if I do I'll put the synos and any rag tag rams (although insofar fighting has been pretty minimal) in there.

I have 3 29 gallon tanks but I won't be of much help. 2 of them have a single arrowhead puffer and some convict fry and the last tank has 1 pair of Honduran Red Points, 4 juvenile C. nanoluteus, 1 small albino bristlenose and 1 small Queen Arabesque pleco.

2 of these tanks are filtered by Whisper 30-60 filters and the other has an Aquaclear 500 on it.

sounds like some nice setups I have an aquaclear 500, I figure its a little overpowered for my tank, but it came with it.
