the few lfs' i visit most often have all raised their prices for fish in the last few months. some of them have raised their prices significantly, for example, i used to be able to buy small angels (less than 1 inch) for $3-4 and now they are $5-8 is this happening anywhere else? is there a shortage of supply of fish or something?

I haven't seen this trend... However, if you get your fish from Florida suppliers, they may have been heavily affected by hurricanes.

Florida's outside ponds were heavily damaged by the last two hurricanes...

Imported fish from Asian countries account for most of the increases.

I haven't noticed an upswing in fish prices, but then again, I haven't been keeping fish as long as some of you have. If there really is a general price increase, I assume it will die down, as more fish from Florida (and other places) become availible.

I've noticed certain fish prices have skyrocketed, while others have remained stable. For example there used to be a LCS that offered sterbais for $8.99, now they sell them (when they have them, which isn't often) for $14.99, and another LFS used to sell them for $15.99 and now $19.99. But the run of the mill fish prices seem to still be the same.

The LFS that I get most of my fish from is locally owned, and the man breeds almost everything himself, so I haven't noticed any change in prices. It might be a different story if I went to some of the chain stores, though.

well, i don't visit any chain stores (don't think we have any that i can get to easily anyway ). but the one that used to be the cheapest is now almost as expensive as the one that *was* the most expensive i haven't been to the "best" (read: most expensive) store in awhile so i can't say if all the lfs' are going up, but at least 2 that i go to have been raising their prices

i have been to a chain fish store since i read this post earlier in the day. the angels went up $1.50 since the last time i have been there. keep in mind the local fish shops may purchase fish locally bred, but chains usually purchase fish wholesale from select fish farms.

in my area, it seems like the weather in florida has affected both chain stores and lfs equally. my cheap source of florida imported ghost shrimp is gone. i have not seen butterfly fish, baby whales, or several other fish for quite some time. all the shops blamed florida for the shortage.

same thing seems to be happening up here... one store i go to frequently often has exotic fish such as arowana in there and the price went up from $65 (in september) to $90 last week. probably from a different supplier, but the $25 increase seems a little unreasonable to me...

I havent noticed fish prices rising at all here, and most of the stores get their fish from Florida.

I know at my LFS the prices are affected by whoever the supplier was as sometimes they will have 2 tanks of the same fish ( mainly cories I have noticed this with ) one will be price for example $1.99 the other tank might be priced at $3.99 for the same fish. It just depends on the supplier they buy from according my buddy that is the manager there as I was wondering what was going on myself after seeing this a couple of times. :%)

Edit:
I was in my local independant shop last night. 3 neons were $12 and they were selling a gold nugget pleco (3 inches) for $69.00.

thats alot for either fish but the gold nugget isn't too outrageous as those use to sell for $99 back in Washington state all the time at my LFS here in PA they are $13.99 or $19.99 depending on the supplier once again.
