I've never had this fish, and prob never will, but this really is interesting....I find it very hard to believe that you cant have this small fish in a room without anything of these things....who really has a room without something like a radio, Tv, etc.....and as far as that goes, the waves would actually move along the entire house not just in that one room????? Please if you have anything on this or if anyone else can Verify this, I am very interested to learn about this.......

Those are just commonly known facts about them.

Just like many books (except beginner ones) don't mention that corys are shoaling fish. Most of the time they don't have to, because it's already a well-known fact.

Keep in mind that they need live foods, can be really finicky about water quality, and cannot be kept in the same room as TV, radios, computers, or any other electronic that gives off electrical waves.

Again, I dont have any experience with them, maybe someone else who has one or several can speak up soon...
But from what I have read on these, they are very agressive with each other, and either need to be left alone, or in larger groups of 6 or so.....In small groups the stronger will pick on the weaker ones...but lets see what the experts With this fish say.....

Cory i have 2 in my room with all of the above and he has been fine now for a little over two years. I can see what you are saying but my dosent seem to mind. I feed him frozen bloodworms and he loves them.

Baby whales, like all Mormyrids, are electric fish. They give off pulses to help themselves navigate at night in their native habitat, and they also use them to find food. But when you have an electical device that also gives off signals, that causes a lot of problems for the fish. The nonstop "noise" stresses them out and will likely kill them.

A good analogy for it is if you had to go through life, day and night, with somebody screaming in your ear. Some people may be able to live like this, but the vast majority wouldn't. It would just be too stressful. The same is true with the fish.

Having the tank in a different room will significantly decrease the "noise" for the fish, and you could also use an aquarium grounding rod to get rid of the rest of the signals.

Simple google search was all it took ...
"Mormyrid fish are capable of generating low-voltage discharges at all times and also produce a weak electromagnetic dipole field around their bodies as means of navigation, protection, and communication. ....

Any manipulation within the field may be sensed by the fish, who is aware of the field distribution along their skin: if something should disturb their defense mechanism or the small, sensitive pores on its head, the fish will act upon it and avoid danger or attack what may be prey. If an object of greater conductivity than the fresh water is placed near the fish, the electric field lines of the fish bend towards the object in attraction, which distorts the field and warns the fish. It is also true that if an object of similar charge is placed near the fish, the field lines of the fish will repel from the object, also warning the fish.

Source

Ephasis added in last paragraph. Electromagnetic waves (all wireless devices including computer equiptment, speakers ect) will be picked up as a stressor by the fish. Stress is in general bad for the fish increasing the likelyhood of various diseases.

If mormyrids have been kept successfully in home aquaria thus far, I suppose you could go ahead with the baby whale, provided you have enough space. That being said, the standard home aquarium is not a suitable enviornment for mormyrids, as fluorescent lighting, wiring, and heaters are E.M.F. "hot spots" so to speak (they don't give off much noticeable EM themselves, but they attract it). So it doesn't really matter whether or not you have a computer in your room or not--any light field will likely be picked up in the tank. metal is also a bit of a problem for morymrids, as the conductivity distorts the fish's electrical field (especially iron based compounds). So doseable ferts and the like should be avoided, as well as most thermometers.

These "whales" are best kept ALONE most fish will goble up any food before it gets a chance. I wouldnt keep even 6 of them the would harass each other with the electric charge. They will also bite other whales. i do have a magzine article about them that i can post if ya want.

I wouldn't recommend keeping a group of any Mormyrids together unless it was an extremely large (500+ gallons) and was densely planted. These fish, once settled in (that's why you see them kept together at the LFS an nowhere else), can and probably will be downright nasty towards each other.

They are usually completely peaceful to other (non-electric) species of fish, however.
