i would say no, becasue they are differnt fish. my guppies try but don't breed with my swordtails, so same with the betta and gourami, its most likely to kill it then breed with it.

I think that wins the award for "typo with the most amusing resultant meaning." Kill it and then breed with it, eh? That just brightened up my day considerably!

It's a bad idea regardless... It wont work... It's like trying to breed a pig with an elephant... and no matter how much Marvin Gaye you play it's not going to work.

On the rare chance that the two fish even tolerate each other, they wouldnt breed. On the even rarer chance that they try to breed, the eggs wouldnt be fertilized. It simply cannot and should not be done; the resulting fish would no doubt be one of the most horrid creatures that ever scourged the earth. Gourami genetics arent built for long fins, as betta genetics arent built for a tall body. The fish would more then likely not be able to swim and would die shortly after birth. Thats just assuming lighting strikes a Susan B Anthony dollar in your pocket and it actually works.

For the good of the hobby please dont do it... But of course you will... Because you want to... So who cares?

more like a cow and a buffalo, or a moose and an elk, but i comment you on your efforts with a pig and an elephant.
a cow and a buffalo are both bovines, and moose and elk are both a type of deer, and bettas and gouramis are both Labyrinths, just my opinion

Dwarf Gourami: Colisa lalia
Betta: Betta splendens

The genus doesnt match... Which means their genetic makeup is too different to hybridize. Guppies and Mollies can hybridize because they are both Poecilia, and even with that much in common it's still very rare. So how do you expect two fish from two very different genotypes to reproduce?

We studied this in science class a few years ago...

Theoretically, 2 organisims can reproduce as long as they both have the same number of chromosomes. If they will breed or not is an entirely different question. Gouramis and Bettas are both labrynth fish and both build bubble nests...they actually might be able to cross breed and produce young...even if they can produce young, it's likely that the young will be too screwed up to swim properly, or have messed up heads and not eat, or something will be genetically wrong. I bet they'd be able to breed...

Anybody know how many chromosomes Bettas and Gouramis have?

It's probably not a guppy/Sword cross - the common feeder guppies are full of traits like fin extensions (swords) and, more commonly, an extension of color into a mostly colorless, normal-shaped tail, which looks rather like a sword. Common guppies are generally a whole mix of colors and types.
