It won't be an oscar, that's for sure, a 55 gal min is recommended but a hex tank has less surface area then a 55 regular tank..

I'd say, firemouth cichlids, rams, angelfish, african cichlids, etc... any small to medium size cichlid..
How about an angelfish pair in your 30.. (with plants and a school of neon tetras) And in your 55 a pair of firemouths or some brichardi ?

Angelfish gets my vote. They would enjoy the height of the hex for sure.

The 30 in height sounds great for keeping a pair of aggressive breeders with targets, as they'd have enough room to escape vertically from the angry parent. I'd think of going with any of the more aggressive paired cichlids that normally cannot be housed with any other fish, such as a pair of jewels or cons.

Aggressive is good. I dont know if jewels would be any meaner than my cons. They attack my hand every time i put it in the watter]

i have a 30 gallon tank 32 inches long and a foot wide, i think. i also have a 55 galon hexagon that is 24 inches wide and 30 or so inches tall.

I was wondering what would be the biggest fish preferably cichlid i could get and it still enjoy its home.

Please list species and specify wich tank

Jewels also like to bully other more shy fish. But they are beautifull and generally not shy.
Mine I have in my tank is is a very aggressive feed, I have to be carefull of bloat with him

Fires or kribs would provide spawing activity and allow enough space for other fish to retreat.

Jack dempseys. They have blue ones now - they're gorgeous!

(they should be fine in either tank - I knew someone who had a JD in a 10 for years...)

Actually the 55 hex might be good for a couple (2-4) of angelfish. They're the right shape for a hex like that and it's plenty big for them
