Yea they can be pretty agressive, especially to another male when they both are mature. It seems like a good pick so far, even with the gouramis fins it hasn't been nipped once by a tiger or puffer.

I had a paradise fish in a 10 gallon and I THINK it killed some of my fish. There are other suspects but I'm pretty sure it was him/her. Anyways, the fish that were killed were a really small gaurami (like not even an inch...it was yellow with red fins) a swordtail...some platys, and thats about it. I eventually had to remove him from the tank. Again, I have little proof it was him. The only other thing in the tank was a group of painted tetras though...

Well i decided to go with a paradise gourami. All seems well so far, the killifish is a good idea but don't those fish shoal? i was looking more for an independent centerpiece like the paradise.

FOur eyed fish might be a good choice
they are mstrictly surface dwelling and will get away quickly from aggresive fish.

I'm assuming you've never kept 4-eyed fish then, 'cuz they're not that slippery to not be caught.

For a center piece as well huh? Try a male Blue Gularis Killifish. Nothing you listed in your tank will bother it, and it will hold its own.

my LFS told me that the Jewels Darft Gouramis are very agressive. Do not know more about them though. They are very beautiful with a deep red shine.

Halfbeaks and Four-Eyed Fish are brackish fish, and cannot survive long term in a freshwater tank.

I too would suggest giant danios. They are not necessarily aggressive, but they sure are intimidating when they hit 6" and are zooming back and forth across the top of the tank. I smaller fish going up to the suface in a tank with a school of giant danios would be equivalent to a person jumping into the middle of a freeway.

I have tigerbarbs/dwarf puffers/ottos in a 29. i like african butterflys but that would most likely eat my puffers, and their not all that active at all. My tank just seems like its missing something and i'm trying to fill the top with a good looking centerpiece. Also my tank is heavily planted so aggression is rarely a problem if ever, but still i need a fish that can defend itself just incase.

ABF are easily harrassed. Mine was even slithgly startled by congo tets. I'd go with giant danios.

African Butterfly Fish are smaller and will eat anything that comes up to their level. I doubt it would get harrassed.

Beat up by what? What's the context for the suggestion? If we suggest halfbeaks and you're keeping mbuna, it's not likely to work out. On the other hand, there may be fish that aren't aggressive per se but work well with aggressive fish, like danios which can evade (some) fish, or adult golden wonders that are big and top-dwelling enough to stay out of harm's way.

So - tank size and inhabitants?

What kind of fish are we talking? Cichlids, or Cyprinids, can you narrow it down a bit?
