Are you sure it is the algae scraper that is doing this? If your butterfly fish is acting funny, I would question the water quality first. What is the pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? How big is the tank? Are the other inhabitants acting funny?

Some of you may know him because he's my bf, as mentioned on another post

The water is fine, I checked it myself. I'll try to give a bit better of an explaination as to what happened. Well, he put in the magnetic alge scarper, and the buttfly fish began to sink, pop up when bothered, and sink again. This process was repeated several times until the removal of the scaper. Ten to fifteen minutes later he was fine.

My question is, just before that, he had added new fish.... Could it be that the butterfly fish was just stressed from the addition, or scared and trying to hide? The only reason I ask this is because every time, the fish sank into a plant.
Thanks for replies!
Brandi

I've never heard of that happening before... perhaps butterflyfish are sensitive to magnetic fields... maybe like elephantnoses they communicate via electric pulses. Somebody should research that...

That's what we were wondering, it's just weird because I have never even heard of that before.

Magnetic fields and electric fields are really one in the same. I would think that your filter and heater (since both give off stray electricity) would upset the butterfly fish more than the magent.
