Does anyone know of a species that can actually breed in small tanks?

Some of the smaller species of killie fish can be spawned in a 2.5 gallon tank. Some killie keepers even use drum bowls...

I breed several killies in 2.5 gal tanks

As for what kind, because killies are a very large number of different fish. And most are hard to come by in the hobby these days. So, you should list those that you maybe can aquire, and thus I can tell you how they will do in these smaller tanks. As some killies will not do well.

Actually these guys need a larger tank, though they can and will breed in a 2.5 gal, they will become deformed with the males actually becoming hump backed. For this reason they require at least a tank of 10 gals. You might look for some of the Gardeni (sp), as most of these will do very well in a 2.5 tank, and breed on the plants.

Well, when I breed killies in a 2.5 gal tank, I have bare bottoms with plants. This makes it easier to clean the tank. I use sponge filters and a ramshorn snail in each tank to not only help with the algae, but with the production of infusoria as well.

But, if you are planning on a 20 gal for a breeder, you might just want the 2.5 gal as a temp fry tank for when your fish in the 20 gal breed.

Livebearers will breed in a 2.5, even if they are too big to live there themselves.

I've had peppered cories breed in a two-gallon before while they were temporarily stationed there.
