hi, yeah my fish require ph 8-9 (african cichlids)

i dont see why i cant use marine rock if ppl can use crushed coral ? arent they the same thing just that my rock isnt crushed ? of course ill have to let the Live stuff die off 1st b4 i can add in into the Fw tank or will it pollute the water.

i just wanna make sure b4 i do it.

thanks for the input tho

anyone else know ?

thnaks

Unless you're going to process it somehow, I would think there would be sanitary issues that would go along with putting in your own dead rock in a fw tank filter. I personally would go to the lfs and get crushed coral or a few chunks of coral, or maybe even some non-coated sea shells ( snails, clams, etc), rather than try to clean up some deceased live rock of my own.

I've seen people use crushed coral as a substrate for their african cichlids. I don't see a problem with your rock as long as you sanitize it well and add it slowly so you don't shock your fish by uppping the pH and hardness too quickly for them to handle.

the best rock is prob Tuffa rock as it boosts PH up iv got 1 bit in my tank and the PH is 7.8 but iv got limestone in there as well. And my PH is still going up!

What is LR typically composed of? If it's a calcite-based rock, and it's been sufficiently cleaned and sterilized then go for it. I don't see why it could hurt. To see if it'll raise pH though, drop some vinegar on the rock and watch for fizzing. If it fizzes, it'll help raise your pH.

Or you could just get yourself some limestone, travertine, or tufa (there's others as well).

I would go for just crushed coral. With live rock in what you are asking about, there is many small holes that contain benificial bacteria. There are also many small animals and such that live in these. Even if you were to sterilize it, you would not be able to get everything out. This would be die off and would pollute the water. I personally would not do this. Also live rock can be spendy, why not go with cheaper rock?

hey guys, thanks heaps for the help!
yeah it should work but 1st ill have to make sure every living thing on the Lr is dead b4 i add it in or else it might "infect" or foul my FW tank. & no no cant have that happening!

thanks

well i have crushed coral in my fw tank i use it as a substrate it gives me a sand look witch looks cool. ph is always stable. um well it looks like you have your mind set on the live rock hopefully you can kill off the bacteria and what ever else is living in there and have no problems with that but im not convinced that you will get rid of everything but that dont mean you will necesseraly have problems i just rather not risk it but if you feel confident enough then by all means go for it.
