I'm pretty sure that figure-8 puffers are freshwater. Most puffers are either brackish or saltwater, but I think these guys are an exception. Just remember, they're pretty aggressive, so one per tank would probably be best, I guess.:%)

No, I'm pretty sure they're freshwater. If you check out these sites, they will confirm that.

I think these puffers are mostly freshwater, but not 100% so. They like a little bit of salt in their water, but not as much as most brackish fish.

EDIT: Hmmm... I guess these guys are brackish, then. The impression I got from some of these sites is that they weren't fully brackish. I guess you can't trust everything you hear these days...

Here's an article written bu a man keeping puffers for over 40 years & has kept F8s alive for over 18+ years in BW: http://www.aaquaria.com/aquasource/8puffer.shtml

He selected them as the puffer to study in depth. He ran 6-12 tanks of F-8s for about a decade and a half, holding the oldest singletons from any early group until they died. His total F-8 experience would have be well over 100 tank years with that species of fish - the longevity trial alone represents almost 90 years of tank experience on just five of thise fish.

after doing hours of research. i have come to the conclusion that figure 8 puffers are considered fresh/brackish. i have see them in both fresh water as well as brackish. people have kept them as fresh water fish as well as brackish with success on both ends.

Just because it's posted on fishprofiles or freshaquarium (which, IMO, isn't all that great of a site) does not neccessarily mean it's correct. Personally, I'd listen to RTR, who is fairly well known in "puffer circles" if I were you.

When I learned that f8s were brackish water fish, I immedeately began converting my 20 gallon to a brackish water enviornment. Since then, I have noticed my pair is more active and their appetites have greatly increased.

Most people who are almost exclusive puffer keepers side with brackish water, and me too.

http://www.pufferfish.co.uk/aquaria/species/pufferfish/types/index.htm
link says brackish for best, but can be conditioned into fw, bw, or sw

Because there is a HUGE amount of misinformation on the web. Most folks would rather believe what they read, than the information from experienced pufferkeepers.
