The U.S. has plenty of these shows yearly, so you can probably find some around where you are. |

Could be an idea to go to the PFK website (www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk), click on the clubs link and contact a few of them to see if they organise any shows (or know of any). |

More information will be given in July/August. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

It's an umbrella organisation that acts as a policy making body for the judging criteria in fish shows, lays down assorted standards, and performs assorted administrative functions in connection with fish shows. It assists in such matters as finding venues for fish shows, supplying judges, and contacting the larger aquarium supply companies for donations of items such as fish food and pieces of equipment to be offered as the prizes to the winners. The biggest sponor is Aquarian Fish Foods in the UK (which is why you'll see HUGE ads for Aquarian products at shows hosted by FBAS affiliated aquarium societies!). You'll notice that there are regional bodies too - so that, for example, a show might be listed as "YAAS rules", which means that the regional rules of the Yorkshire Amateur Aquatic Society apply to that meeting. These regional bodies began life as [bona fide aquarium societies in their own right, then became absorbed over time into the FBAS as local societies on a smaller level proliferated. Over time, the intention is to harmonise rules so that eventually, all fish shows will be subject to identical judging criteria, so that wins in different parts of the UK can be compared directly without having to mess about with calculations to see whose fish would have won what elsewhere! One problem with the current arrangement is that there is relatively little provision for societies to exist whose primary purpose is something other than showing fish at shows on a competitive basis. My local aquarist society was heavily biased around the "show team", and when critical members of that show team were no longer able to take part (in one case as a result of dying of cancer) the society more or less disintegrated, which was a shame. Plus, competitive showing has a down side in that a society can become bogged down in bureaucracy and internal politics rather than concentrating on the fish. One BIG event in the north west of England is held at G-MEX in Manchester annually. Now that is a fish show and a half, you can expect to see something like 5,000 entries in that one from aquarist societies within a 50 mile radius of the venue ... Another organisation to look out for is IFOCAS - this is the international organisation that fulfils the same role globally as FBAS does in the UK. ![]() |
