English unciation beh-tuh. Longer words(scientific words) in english though tend to be harder to follow unciation guidelines...... since they also carry unciations from latin/greek and just tend to be a MOUTHFUL.

I ounce betta like "bay-tah", even though some people insist that it is ounced "bet-tah". Their version sounds like something an ignorant redneck would say, not like Latin. I also ounce Corydoras leucomelas like "luke-oh-may-las", even though PlanetCatfish says "look-oh-mell-us". When people ounce Latin words like English words, it just sounds weird... I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

The Greek letter Beta I assume you're comparing it to has (in its English transliteration) only one T, allowing the long E sound. The unciation "bet-tuh" is correct in both English and Latin - not that it matters a whole heck of a lot really. For some odd reason I think the pleco might actually be "Pleeko-Stow-Muss." It almost makes sense... if you're drunk... and you're 1... and you're braindead. Okay, not funny.

Had we have been talking instead of typing, all but one of you would have more than likely misounced it.

I know how to spell all the names, but sometimes I get confused on how to ounce things I don't keep. This is a funny thread though, I'm enjoying it. I kept saying that as "julie" until I heard someone ounce it as "Julie-eye." Now I'm confused. shrugs That person is correct. Because of the two 'i's it has, Julii is ounced 'julie-eye'.
