I was wondering if anyone knew of any small, top-dwelling fish. Most of the fish in my tank stay toward the bottom/middle (black neons and gold barbs). Thanks in advanced!

Gouramis and Hatchetfish are what spring immediately to mind, but we could make more specific recs if we knew your tank size.

Bettas are a good, small, top-dwelling fish.

Zebra danios or if your tank temp isn't too high, White Cloud minnows.

Not sure if this is always the case but my Endler's and guppies are top-dwellers.

butterfly fish, glass cats (if you have current towards the surface), or a male betta (depending on other tank mates) come to mind

In my tank the guppy are always at the top and my black neon tetras are *almost* always very near the top as well.

So are my corys I keep telling them they don't belong there but they just won't listen

Almost all Rasboras will spend most of their time at the top part of the tank.

Gouramies aren't really top dwellers.
Depending on size of tank and how many fish you can add..
Hatchetfish are very cool..
African Butterfly fish are one of my faves..but if one of those little neons gets in front of one it'll be dinner.

African Butterfly fish and Golden wonder killie (Aplocheilus lineatus). Of course, anything that fits in their mouth would get swallowed. With any top dwelling fish 'cept zebra danios you're going to need some sort of plant cover up there to keep them from getting all jumpy on your carpet.
Where do upside down catfish hang out? No really?

Keep in mind that if you have strong water movement in the surface a betta will prefer to stay at the bottom of the tank , just like mine does . Guppies dont seem to mind water movement

I have guppies, they're nice. They spend most of their time near the top. I have zebra danios too, but they spend their time all over the tank. I had platies, they were nice too.

Glolight danios, Danio choprae, look spectacular with good lighting. They spend almost all of their time at the top, and are very peaceful and active fish.

Ugh... Stupid expired Premie Membership... Here's a link:
