the benifits of gravel vac is to remove fish waste and uneaten food that rots in the water releasing ammonia which is toxic to fish. so it is good practise to clean the gravel, even is heavly planted, just do it less.

Is that enough gravel to even cover the bottom completely? I have 15 pounds in my 10 and even that doesn't look like enough...

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Only 4 pounds? Wow, it took about 10 pounds of sand for each of my 10 gallons. And gravel would be even heavier.

And about your question, I second what Shekoi said. It is very important. Even with the strongest filter, there will still be dirt trapped in the gravel. And that extra waste does need to be removed.

I just bought a really nifty (and inexpensive) gravel vac from an on-line store (Which I may not be allowed to mention? But it rhymes with "Big Sal's"! ). It's powered by an air pump, and slurps up all the gunk into a small cloth bag. I was disgusted with how much "stuff" I got out of my gravel (I try to gravel vac when I do water changes every 2 weeks, but this vac is smaller, so let's me get into the crevices and around plants a lot better).

At any rate, it's a Penn Plax Air Vacuum, and I paid US$5. Best aquarium tool I've got!

R U shure there is enough gravel in there? there should be at leats 1.5-2 inches of gravel vivible at the bottom. Onto the point, If you want "shiny" clean and a liverble enviroment for ur fish, then a vacume cleaner is neccessary.

I always use approximately 1 lb of gravel/1 gallon of water, but I don't buy the gravel in such a way specifically, that's just how much it works out to when I think there's enough gravel in the tank...

As for gravel-vaccing, you oughta no matter the amount of gravel you have. It helps get rid of the gunk that NO fish will eat
