I placed a fake rock into a plastic hex tank and put enough water in to cover the rock. I have the tank sitting on a window sill. During the day, the binds are always open, so the tank should be getting plenty of sunlight. I have had the tank like this for 6 days now, and so far I haven't noticed anything different. How long does it take to grow algae? Is there something I need to add to the water to help the process along?

Be careful, once the algea gets started it will be almost impossible to stop. Why do you want algea so bad anyway?
In 2 weeks you wont know what to do.

I want the algae to grow on the rock so I can toss it in my tank with ottos. The ottos seems fine with the sinking wafers, but I figured they would really like to have some real algae to nibble on.

The hex tank was only used for water changes. And now for growing algae. So if I am over-run by algae in that tank, that's ok.

It can take up to 2 weeks for the algae to start growing, though it should take less.

The algea needs something to eat...like nitrates or ferts, you might just want to use some tank water.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking of doing this weekend, when I do water changes on my other tanks. Hopefully that will be what's needed, then my ottos can enjoy some real algae.
