i cant stop my guppies from breeding, but you definately should have two females for every male (stops them nipping at each others fins as well). Are you certain that your female isn't pregnant? If her stomach is going black then she is, you can even sometimes see little eyes...soo cuute. My LFS females are always pregnant (usually try and buy them so I can have babies earlier)

How often do Guppies breed, and how long untill the fry are born.

In regard to "why don't the guppies at the lfs breed"..... My lfs keeps the male and female guppies in separate tanks... I would assume this is done to control the population - but I can't figure out why, since the more the store has the more they'll have to sell.... Another strange thing about this "separate tank" business is the fact that the lfs gladly took several of my pregnant females!!!????!!!!! (I'm still overstocked - but have at least reduced my community!).....
As far as if what you'll do with your surplus (once you've had fry) - I'd try checking with your lfs.... I checked with mine and they appear to be more than willing to take the fry off my hands - but only after they reach a "sellable" size... Now granted, I've gotten some store credit at times, while at other times, I haven't..... But I don't really care - because I love the birthing process!

They probably do breed, the parents eat the fry though sometimes. I have been to my LFS and they had a tank of baby neon tetra or wcmm.

Yeah im breeding guppys atm - along with mollys and dwarf gouramis.... guppys do need a higher ratio of females to males - i prefer a 2:1 ratio and like someone said - if you do shop around you can get some beatuful females as well as males.... good luck, but my suggestion is get 2-3 more females and another male. That should be fine. gd luck ;-)

You don't even need to feed them any special foods. They will breed in any aquarium if you have the right ratio or male to female. Guppy's, if given the right ratio of male to female, will breed and drop babies every 30 days or so. They won't stop breeding because it is there natural instinct to breed and make more generations of guppy's. Some female guppy's will not drop there whole spawn at once, but instead have subsequent birthings.

If you have 2 males then add three or four more females. Most of the females I've purchased in the past have came home pregnant. Guppies are baby machines. With 4 or 5 females and 2 males You'll have more guppies than you know what to do with in a couple monthes time. Good luck and happy breeding.

I agree with everything posted above

My only additional suggestion is to add one more male with the females that you get. There is a slight chance that the two you have are sterile.

7 females and 3 males would work fine in a 10g.

You do have another tank for fry correct?

I would definitely try adding more females... One benefit of this would be to reduce stress on your only female at present... I believe the general suggested ratio is 2-3 females for every male... Some "fish people" have commented that they would rather stock more males than females due to their more brightly colored finnage... However, if you shop, you can find many fine female specimens in bright color or at the least with striking tails! Keep us updated on your breeding progress!
