I applaud you for your concern is trying to make him comfortable. But using a heater with no water circulation is a bad idea, a sudden temp change of even 2 degrees can result in ill health or put the fish into shock, resulting in death.. I'd just pull the heater out. Take it to the store soon as possible.

The best thing would have been to leave that fish in the tank at your friends house until you could take the fish to the store. Considering it was already in ill health. (least amount of stress for the fishes sake)

thas a Featherfin Syno I believe or a species that was sold to me under the name of Upside down Catfish. It looks excactly like mine, if it has a fin that looks all ripped and spikey at the end don`t worry, it a Featherfin, if it doesn`t it what was sold to me as a Upsidedown Catfish. It should reach around 4inche and I reccomend you keep it, they are amazing catfish and are quite rare now compared to what they used to be!

im having problems

hes not lookin so great, i think its due to lack of airstone, or that i cant keep the heater consistent because it is too large.

sometimes swimming sideways, whats wrong with him???

And you'll be happy to know I found a heater to use in his litle plastic tank thingy. unfortunately i dont have an airstone on hand but maybe I could buy one tomorow at the petshop and that would buy him a little more time untill i can get him to the big fish store.

thanks for the tip!

unfortunatley i have spent hours fretting over the stocking plan and just finally settled on it I don't have room for him but I know he'll be fine at the fish store though, their fish always look happy, otherwise i would definitely keep him

btw have we figured out what the white gunk on his sides could be?

Cool tank (the trim matches your dresser!) and catfish. Yup it's a Syno allright.. Very nice

Ya know... You could keep it ! Do up some nice rock caves and such and add some African cichlids from Lake Malawi. You can even have some creative fun making your own caves from pieces of flat rock. Just a thought.

Also you might want to cut a piece of cardboard trimmed to the size of your tank and stick it underneath.

that catfish is definetly a Synodontis of some type. My money is that it is a Syno Eupterus- Featherfin Synodontis Catfish. A very very cool fish by the way, but not a good fish for a tank with smaller fish as he will likely eat them. A nice healthy looking fish too, amazing he came from scum...but hey Catfish can live through almost anything!
Congrats on your desire to find this guy a better home!

Hi, my friend who is moving offered me her tank. I have 1 problem: there is a 6" cat of some kind (i know its not a common plecostamus as it is quite old and only 6" and my friend mentioned it was some kind of cat i just cant remeber what kind she said it was.) still in the tank. I need to empty the tank and transport the tank to my house, clean it out, (will hot water be good enough to clean the tank? i'm pretty sure the tank is healthy), and start it from scratch. I am planning on taking the mysterious cat thing to my LFS as i definitely have no room for him/her/whatever. In the mean time, what do I do with the cat? I have an established 10 gallon but it is already full and I already have to squeeze in 4 harlequin rasboras for a couple days!

Will the cat be ok in like a big bucket of water for a day or so until i can get him to the LFS if i keep it warm and change the water frequently? I don't have another option!

no unfortunately my plans don't allow for a big fat fish like that in my new (used) tank. I'm just interested to see what kind of cat he is. I am bringing him in to a pretty reputable fish store who said they would take him no problem. I see their quarantines/returns all the time and they always look happy and healthy

here are the pix:

here he is in the transport container from my friends house to mine:

anyone have any clue what the white smudgies on him are? they look like paint. no clue what it is, i've seen this cat many times at my friends house before, and as far as i can remeber hes had that on him for quite a long time.

edit: oh and thanks for the volume calculator, i've determined its a 29 gallon.

http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/convert.asp?type=tvol

I looked at some of the profiles and here are what i thought looked closest:
http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Hypostomus+niceforoi
http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Chaetostoma+milesi

I also got my camera back! yay! and I'm setting up a tank/bucket/thingy. I salvaged about a gallon and a half of water from his old tank and I will start adding some water and trying to scrape up some spare gravel from my 10. dont wanna mix it in too fast. I am using a container that is longer/wider than it is tall I think this will suit the cat better.

I will update once I get him in his new house and some decent pix.

If you're taking the catfish to the store then there's no need for us to be identifying it no ? Also, my buddy got a 12" catfish from a store, then plopped it into his tank.
Realized it was too big for the tank, and put it in a bucket overnight, his room got cold, the bucket was small and the fish was dead by morning..

I'd say - leave the catfish in the tank that it's in with the existing water, until you can take it to the store...
Then proceed.. Or did you already move it ?

If the tank wasn't leaking, I wouldn't be concerned with it. To make sure the algae under there is in fact dead, put bleach on it. Just make sure you rinse the tank VERY thoroughly after you do so.

i JUST went and brought it over

umm the reason i am breaking down the tank is it has been running for a long time and was basically neglected. it needs some MAJOR cleaning. Also needs a new filter (ouch!)

unfortunately i dont have my digital camera but i will look at the profiles on this site and try to identify the cat.

edit: by the way when i said neglected, I really mean neglected, like I am surprised there was still stuff living in there! the gravel was disgusting taking it out, I think it had like 10 years or so of fish waste in it! the water became black and muddy. I also had to take a razor to it to get the algae off the sides.

In fact some of the silicone from the corners is lifting about 1/8th of an inch in one spot and has algae growing under where it has lifted. should i be concerned about this?

Okay, first off, if you completley break down the tank you are losing all of your beneficial bacteria, and you're going to put a lot of stress on this catfish too. If the tank is up and running why break it down? If it's not, thats a different story. I suggest looking at the following thread about moving tanks.
As for the ID of the catfish, the fact that is is 6" only narrows down the choices a little bit, can you give us a picture or a further description of the guy? That will help us a lot more.

EDIT: Garten beat me

The cat should be ok in the bucket IF

1) You start it with water from the tank.

2) You put an airstone in, so he has plenty of oxygen.

3) The temp is stable and to his liking. Add a heater if need be.

4) Putting in a layer of gravel from the established tank (an inch or 2 thick) wouldn't hurt either.
