Usually they are only high during the build up of bennificial bacteria of the cycle process. Fish produce ammonia, bennificial bacteria convert ammonia to nitrItes, another bennificial bacteria convert the nitrItes to nitrAtes. Then we do water changes to remove the build up of nitrAtes. Most fish tolerate higher levels of nitrItes, but do not tolerate ammonia levels hardly at all, and have trouble tolerating very high levels of nitrAtes. We need to know more about your tank, to determine the problem. What size tank, how many fish, what are the fish, and what size are the fish? How long has your tank been set up and running, when was the last time you added more fish to the tank, and what kind of filtration do you have? Do you add any chemicals to the water, such as ph stabilizer, fertilizer for any plants, water hardening substances, or water softening substances? Please answer these questions as we can better help to answer yours. Last edited by acidrain at 28-Dec-2004 11:30 There is always a bigger fish... |
