I have recently purchased another small tank, a 5 gal, for my swords babies but am not sure when to put her in or even how a pregnant sword is supposed to appear. She is all black so i cannot tell if she has the black spot on her underbelly. any helpful advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you can't see the gravid spot then you just have to go by the plumpness factor and I'm not sure if that can be explained. It's just guessing really.

Sometimes when they are about to drop they hang near the bottom or hover over a plant but not always.

Good luck, Mike

Just watch for when she starts getting really fat. When her belly starts getting almost square shaped she is getting close to having them. It best to move her in some kind of container to her new tank. Netting cuases too much stress on them. Try to dip her out with the container if you can.

Here's a link (at least I hope....) showing a photo of a pregnant sword.

I recently purchased Black Tuxedo swordtails for my 29g. I could tell she was about to pop by comparing her to the others when I bought her. If you have other swords, compare her to other females. My sword popped only after one day of having her. She looked like she was about to explode. The person at the store said that the gestation period can be shortened if the water temp is slightly raised. Hope this is helpful! Good luck becoming a parent!

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!
