Ok, I have a small 2 gallon tank, and there is sand in there. I have stirred the sand and everything, but it is still dirty. There are like black areas everywhere.

I want to put sand in my 10 gallon tank, but I dont want it to turn out like that.

with sand. you try to stir or disturb it as little as possible and just put clean water once it settled. and just use a air tube and a little sucking and hover it over the sand to remove dirt

You really don't want to be stirring the sand. All you need to do is just rake through the sand. I not to sure about the black areas in the sand. My sand has black pieces throughout it, but that's just part of the sand, it's not dirt.

Black parts=anerobic spots=pockets of H2S=smelly.

Just rake through it every week and you shouldn't have any problems.

Theres no filter in the tank.

I know the black parts were anerobic pockets, that's why i stirred it up... and i stirred it damn good, but it still black?? I think the worms are storing their food in the sand or something.

The tank is too small to fit the python into anyway... so I have to change the water with a little bucket thing

Oh yea.. if you think that stuff is smelly.. try drinking it (I was trying to use a tube to take the water out... big nono)

I want to put this in my 10 gallon, but I don't want the same thing happening to it... although the worms are dirty and fish really arent.

<b]Not sure, but I'd keep a filter in there, just in case. You can never have water that's TOO clean. If you aren't planning to keep plants, an inch of sand should suffice. That plus weekly rakings should prove to be effective at preventing them from occuring.</b]

I have sand in a 20 gallon long and it hasnt collected any black spots yet. I have a emperor 400 on it though. My pet turtle. He does the raking for me.

My girlfriend's friend uses sand in his 10 gallon, no black spots. He rakes through it every week and uses a penguin mini hob filter.

Maybe it's just needs some type of filtration?
